THE BEGINNING
Ruth and David Harris came to Las Vegas, New Mexico in the early 1900’s and purchased a beautiful ranch. Mr and Mrs. David Harris brought Angus cattle to the ranch. Mr. And Mrs. Harris had four children Isabel, Joseph, David and Martha. Growing up on the ranch Joseph was the most interested in the ranch. Joe Harris grew up on the ranch with a love for horses and cattle.
After high school, Joe Harris attended NMSU in Las Cruces, New Mexico majoring in PreVet classes. His passion was bovine genetics and nutrition sharing with his children and grandchildren the important values of animal care with gentleness and kindness to his cattle and horses. Many of our customers comment how docile our heifers and bulls are. Joe Harris spent one year at NMSU, and with the outbreak of WWII he volunteered. He had his mother sign for him to join the Army at 17 years old. He returned to the ranch after the war in 1946 from Europe.
Joe Harris took over all operations of the ranch when he returned from WWII. He introduced cattle nutrition, vaccination program, breeding advances and land management including pasture rotation, grass and tree management, cross fencing and water preservation.
Joe Harris married Evelyn Wootton and had a family of three daughters, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He died in 2008. We were all fortunate to learn from Joe Harris on how to raise animals with love and care and to take care of the land. Following in his footsteps, the ranch was expanded to breeding registered Angus cattle with the foundation herd of heifers coming from the leading breeders of Angus cattle in the United States. The bull development program was moved to the north ranch in the beautiful Mora Valley.
4G Mountain Angus carries on the legacy of Joe Harris who took great care of the land and the animals. 4G Mountain Angus is culled for productivity traits, and is managed to meet the needs of commercial operations in the Midwest and Western states.
